The Galloway School believes that strong writing and communication skills will open doors to many possibilities. Good writers develop their craft over time following the writing workshop process. Six +1 Traits of Writing and The Writing Academy Programs are two writing models adopted by The Galloway School to provide instructional writing consistency throughout a student's learning while attending Galloway.

All classrooom teachers are trained in Six+1 Traits of Writing and The Writing Academy, and writing serves as an intregal part of each day's instruction as students learn to write for a variety of purposes and across all academic disciplines. Students not only receive writing instruction in their core academic classes, but also attend the Writing Academy Lab twice each week. The Writing Academy is taught by a teacher with a specialization in writing. The writing lab teacher takes writing instruction to a deeper level with weekly mini-lessons that emphasize a specific writing convention or strategy.

Students who exhibit exceptional writing skills and strong interests in writing will have many possibilities to publish their writing in professional magazines by entering multiple writing contests. Additionally, writing competitions are available in the afterschool EXTEND program for students who excel in the writing area.
