Summer Reading 2014 – Incoming Third Grade

Wherever your summer adventures take you and your family, reading is a great way to beat the heat and relax as a family. So, don’t forget to pack a few tales, including that summer reading!

Third Grade Summer Reading Requirements

·         Required

Read two books from the HAISLIN Reading list AND two books from the Bluebonnet list. At least one book should be a chapter book, and one book should be a non-fiction book.

·         Assignment

Cereal Box – Complete the project detailed below on one of the FICTION summer reading books.

1.       Front – Create a cover on paper. Invent a name for the cereal that relates to the book title. Include the name of the cereal and a picture on your cover. The picture should include the cereal, so choose a cereal shape, color, and ingredient that relates to the book. For example, Wizard Wands is a toasted oat cereal in lightning bolt shapes for Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Glue this cover on the front of your box.

2.       Right Side – List the ingredients that include the story elements of characters and setting. Be sure to add the heading INGREDIENTS. Write a sentence about each character and describe the setting.

3.       Left Side – Write a summary that describes the main problem and the solution. Use words that grab the reader’s attention so they want to buy your cereal.

4.       Back – Design a game, a puzzle, or an activity based on your story, such as a word search, crossword puzzle, or hidden pictures. Make sure the design includes information from the book.

5.       Top – Write the title, the author, the number of pages, and the number of stars you rate the book. Five stars is the maximum.

6.       Prize – Decide on a prize that reminds you of the main character. Include a picture of the prize on the front of the box to let the reader know what is inside.

7.       Students should be prepared to turn their cereal box in the first week of school.  Students will receive a completion grade. Let your child’s creativity flow. Teachers will not be assessing factors, such as spelling and grammar.
