========================================================
Here's some interesting notes on first use of the Surface RT including swiping, Microsoft Updates, some fun things, and an oddity.
Swiping:
It's just like a PC (Desktop, logins, task manager, etc), but with interesting swipe functionality. Besides normal swiping when a application is running to scroll and move, you can access other things by using the following (it's best to start these swipes in the border/black area):
Swiping on the right side of the Surface to the left displays the charm bar with the applications settings.
Swiping on the left side of the Surface to the right shows the next application
Swiping from the bottom of the Surface to the top displays application menu buttons (not to be confused with the applications settings)
Swiping from the top of the Surface to the bottom AND HOLDING makes the application smaller -- if you then drag it to the bottom of the screen, it closes the application.
So, the Surface Shuffle...
Application Settings: Swipe from the right to the left
Change applications: Swipe from the left to the right
Application Menu Bar: Swipe from the bottom to the top
Close Application: Swipe from the top to the bottom
By the way, that cool "more than one application up at once" feature: Swipe from the top to the left or right.
Updates:
Regarding updates, one thing that needed to be done that took a while (on the order of a couple of hours, depending on internet speed) is updates. Remember the charm bar (Swipe from the right to the left). Choose Settings (the top portion of the Settings are settings for your current app. The bottom portion is System Settings.), then Change PC Settings. Scroll down on the left side and choose Windows Update. On the right have it apply the latest updates (for me there were about 20 updates). It will then restart. Then, go back and do it all again, because for me the Office 2013 updates showed up (a 550+Mb install that upgrades you from Office 2013 Preview).
Other Fun Things:
This hopefully is enough to get you familiarized with the Surface and its basic functionality. Some other fun things:
Move the Start icons: press and hold and move.
See the icons settings (e.g. to make it smaller or larger): do a quick swipe from the top of the icon down.
Change colors and backgrounds: Charm Bar -> Settings -> Change PC Settings -> Personalize (left side, scroll to top)
Restart/Reboot: Charm Bar -> Settings -> Power -> Restart
Oddities:
Microsoft Word: When starting Word and choosing the Home tab, an error occurs stating "There is insufficient memory or disk space. Word cannot display the requested font." However, from what I can tell, other than a delay, the fonts appear correct and Word is still functional. Restarting the device appears to solve this problem.
